BOARD OF HEALTH/ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES

MAY 10, 2010

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

 

 

 

Members Present:  Gaylen Hicok, Dr. Lisa Kapler, Dr. Jodie Buehler and Pat McDonnell.

 

Members Absent:  Rosemary Tobin

 

Others Present:  Jeff Sherman, Floyd County Sanitarian, Gail Arjes, Director of Public Health and Kim Schrage.

 

Guest:  Lisa Koppin, NIACAO and Peggy Funk, I-Smile Coordinator

 

 

Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm by Pat McDonnell.

 

Agenda approved Motion to approve agenda by Dr. Jodie Buehler, seconded by Gaylen Hicok.  Motion carried.

 

Minutes from the March 8, 2010 meeting reviewed and approved by the Board.  Motion made by Gaylen Hicok, seconded by Dr. Lisa Kapler.  Motion carried.

 

Gail Arjes, Floyd County Public Health/Home Health Administrator

 

A:  YTD Budget:  Gail presented budget, 72.35%  of expenses used and 67.97% of income received as of March 31st.   Budget amendment was made for FY09. 

 

B:  VFC Program Re-enrollment Grant was signed to continue for Fiscal Year 2011.  Floyd County provides immunization clinics for children 18 years old and under for children under insured, no insurance and for those who have Title 19. 

 

C:  Healthy Communities Grant This grant consists of $100,000 over 2 year period.  Dennis Hanley came to Floyd County Public Health to audit grant.  This grant provides counseling to students at the Charles City High School and Middle School.  These students will be seen through the summer. 

 

 

 

D:  Tobacco Grant Application Jill Streich with the after school program approached Public Health about applying for the Tobacco Grant.  She asked if she could collaborate with public health for financials and education.  Grant submitted and awaiting notice.

 

E:  Love Our Kids Grant Update This grant was used to focus on bike safety and 100 helmets were purchased through this grant.  An educational presentation was held on April 27, 2010 at the Methodist Church in Charles City, 142 people attended and 83 helmets were given away.  The remainder of the helmets will be used at the Bike Rodeo. 

 

F:  Lisa Koppin, NIACAO Lisa Koppin gave her report to the Board on the different programs they provide to Floyd County. 

Maternal Health seeks to serve pregnant women of all ages, especially those who may be at high risk.

 Family Planning provides reproductive health and family planning services to assist individuals in exercising personal choice in determining the number and spacing of children.

Child Health promotes optimal health for children through periodic examination and early diagnoses of illness to provide effective diagnosis and treatment. 

WIC the goal is to improve the nutrition status and the access to healthcare for low income pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum women, and infants and children under the age of 5 years. 

 

Peggy Funk, I-Smile Coordinator Peggy presented her school dental screening audit report to the Board of Health.  The goal of the school dental screening requirement is for every child to have an exam or screening by a dentist.  Motion made by Dr. Lisa Kapler and seconded by Dr. Jodie Buehler for Peggy to continue doing the dental audits in the schools.  Motion carried.

 

Jeff Sherman, Floyd County Sanitarian Report

 

A:  YTD Budget Jeff informed the Board of Health that 85% of his expenditure budget has been used. 

 

B:  Food Inspections Jeff received a letter from Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health informing him they have terminated their state contract regarding food, tanning, tattoo, pool and Spa Inspections.  The reason for terminating the contracts is the fees that support the regional inspection program have failed to keep pace with the cost of providing the services. Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health can no

 

 

 

longer utilize local tax dollars to support inspection services regionally.  Jeff suggested Misty might be trained for the food inspections. 

 

C:  Septic Tank Report 25 permits issued since January 2010. 

 

Old Business:  No old business.

 

New Business:  No new business.

 

Next meeting will be held on July 12th, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the Floyd County Public Health Office located at 1003 Gilbert Street.

 

Motion to adjourn meeting was made by Pat McDonnell, seconded by Gaylen Hicok.  Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
