BOARD OF HEALTH/ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES
MAY 15, 2012
Members Present: Dr. Lisa Kapler, Rosemary Tobin, Dr. Jodie Buehler, Gaylen Hicok, and Patrick McDonnell
Members Absent: None
Others Present: Gail Arjes, Administrator Floyd County Public Health; Jeff Sherman, Floyd County Sanitarian; Peggy Funk, I-Smile Coordinator; and Wendy Hippen, North Iowa Community Action
Meeting called to order at 6:00 pm by Dr. Lisa Kapler.
Agenda reviewed with the following additions:
II E. Pertussis
III E. Misty’s award
III F. Rabies.
Motion made by Pat McDonnell to approve the agenda with the additions, seconded by Jodie Buehler, motion carried.
Minutes of the March 12, 2012 meeting reviewed. Motion made by Jodie Buehler to approve the minutes, seconded by Rosemary Tobin, motion carried.
Wendy Hippen and Peggy Funk presented information in regards to North Iowa Community Actions services offered in Floyd County. Handout was given with statistics for the programs of Maternal Health, Family Planning, Child Health, I-Smile, and WIC. Children and families are continuing to be served and discussion was held in regards to teen pregnancy and getting Wendy in contact with youth groups locally to present her “It takes two” program. Peggy Funk gave report on dental audits in Floyd County schools. The number of children with dental cards is still below the state average with the exception of RRMR schools. Peggy also reported she is available for trainings and education.
Gail Arjes, Floyd County Public Health/Home Health Care Administrator
YTD budget reviewed, no amendment needed for this fiscal year.
Chart audits conducted by outside agency were discussed and report handed out for Board of Health to review findings.
Floyd County Public Health will be participating/partnering with the Floyd County Medical Center with the 5K they are organizing and will be a drop off site for citizens participating in the program. Floyd County Public Health will be handing out sunscreen and sun safety tips to those handing in their log forms.
Pertussis was discussed and Gail informed the Board that Iowa is in OUTBREAK mode for Pertussis. Information was sent to Floyd County providers in regards to this. This same information was handed out to Board of Health members.
Jeff Sherman Floyd County Sanitarian Report
Jeff presented the Board with his YTD budget which is at 80.45% and also did a budget amendment for this year for insurance and fuel.
Jeff updated the Board on wells and GTC funds. Misty started to mail out post cards for water samples and we are getting good response from them.
Jeff updated the Board on septic systems.
Jeff gave a report on his recent training in Des Moines at the Iowa Preparedness and Response Summit. It was well worth the time.
Jeff informed the Board that Misty had received an award from the Iowa Environmental Health Association for Professional of the Year.
Jeff also discussed procedures for handling animal bites and rabies with the recent letter received from the City of Charles City. Gail, Misty and Jeff will meet with the City and the Sheriff to discuss further, and then Jeff will report back to the Board.
